Palaro track records still pending amid substandard oval issue
JR Isaga
The Department of Education (DepEd) stayed in its lane as the controversial track oval at the renovated Cebu City Sports Center – reportedly two meters under the standard 400-meter loop – left pending several Palarong Pambansa sports records.
DepEd deferred the verdict to the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA), with DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Cesar Bringas noting the national sports association’sauthority during a press conference on Saturday, July 13, at the CCSC Media Center.
“We are trying to have a third party that will come in to get the measure, to validate the measurement of the contractor at 398 [meters],” said Bringas.
“Why is this so important? Because we have the PATAFA that provides the guidelines for the measurement of the oval…and a consequence of [an inaccurate] measurement of the standard oval would result [in] the non-inclusion of the official times of our runners.”
“If we [at DepEd] certify that they are on standard, [PATAFA will also] be dragged into the controversy, and that will be a red flag to the World Athletics association as well,” added Bringas.
Confined delegates down to 8, says Bringas

In a press conference on Saturday, July 13, Palarong Pambansa secretary general Francis Cesar Bringas announced that only eight delegates remain confined in the hospital due to various concerns. No critical conditions were monitored, the Department of Education assistant secretary added.
The day before, Peter Mancao from the Palaro medical committee reported that around 10-11 were confined, down from 23.
At least 129 were brought to the Cebu City Medical Center for various concerns, the doctor added, from “manageable” injuries like sprains and nasal fracture, to cases like pneumonia, tonsillitis, and dengue.
When asked if the dengue cases were traced to Palaro venues, Mancao answered that they were most likely acquired before delegates arrived in Cebu City.
Dengue symptoms usually begin 4-10 days after infection, according to the World Health Organization.
