But classics hang in for the long run. Plaid is one of those enduring designs. It's a perennial favorite that can be tailored or dressy, sporty or sophisticated. The use of checkered garments dates back to ancient times. The Irish, the Britons, the Caledonians of Scotland and the Celts in Europe all wore them.

Some of the most popular plaids are tartans, which developed in Scotland as a means of identification for individual clans. The design consists of stripes of various widths and colors that cross at right angles against a solid color background. Scottish literature first referred to the tartan in the 1200s. In the 1840s, the frequent visits of Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, to their Scottish estate at Balmoral stimulated an interest in the tartan kilt, which is still in fashion today. "We do love our plaids," said Dick Poth, manager of the women's wear division of Pendleton Woolen Mills in Portland, Ore.

"I guess we make them because we sell them, and we sell them because we make Pendleton was incorporated in 1909 as a manufacturer of fabric and blankets and is noted for classic styles in authentic Scottish tartans and its own plaid designs. The women's wear division is celebrating its 40th anniversary. "Year in and year out, the black watch tartan is the No. 1 seller," Poth said. Black watch is a navy and dark green tartan.

One reason for the popularity of the black watch tartan in recent years is an increase in career dressing, Poth said. Darker plaids lend themselves better to the business world than bright red, which used to be the best seller. Hoglund Mr. and Mrs. Jon W.

Hoglund, 2302 N. Gayman Davenport, were honored at a family dinner Nov. 28 to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. MaryAnn Schultz and Mr. Hoglund were married Nov.

20, 1964, at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Davenport. Mr. Hoglund is employed by Mid-Central Food Sales, Davenport. His wife is employed by the Davenport Community Schools.

Their sons are Matthew and Mark, both of Davenport. "Plaid goes in cycles, but it never totally disappears," said Sheila Kamensky, fashion merchandising director at Rich's in Atlanta. "It's more important some years than others. This is not an especially big year for plaids, but last year WAS an enormous year for tartans." Some people associate plaid particularly with the holiday season. They have a favorite long plaid skirt or plaid necktie they like to wear on Christmas Day.

"It's a traditional Christmas statement in both men's and women's fashions," Ms. Kamensky said. "It's a classic Christmas look.".
